Brunswick, Maine is rapidly approaching its deadline to complete its Food Waste Recycling Initiative in August. The goal of this initiative is to double the amount of household food waste tonnage diverted away from the landfill.
Background
Brunswick received a Waste Diversion Grant from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for $19,311 supporting their three-pronged approach to community food waste recycling. This approach supports household subscriptions to a curbside compost service, backyard composting and town drop-off sites. This grant helped the Brunswick Public Works Department hire an Organics Intern and to sell food waste recycling materials at a discount to Brunswick residents. This grant will be fulfilled in August at the close of Brunswick’s Food Waste Initiative.
This effort has been supported by social media outreach, public education efforts and metric tracking. Brunswick has hosted several food waste recycling material giveaways while also selling these materials at a discount.

Agri-Cycle’s Role
This grant funding was also used to open a second food waste drop-off site serviced by Agri-Cycle. There are now two drop-off sites in Brunswick that accept all sorts of household food waste from residents. These sites provided Brunswick residents with a free and convenient option for recycling food waste as they are open 24/7. One of these sites is located at 9 Industry Road, while the other is located at 220 Neptune Drive in Brunswick.
